If you've ever looked into custom apparel for your business, you've probably run into two options — print on demand or bulk ordering. Both have their place, but choosing the wrong one can cost you time, money, and storage space. Here's a straightforward breakdown to help you decide.

What is Print on Demand? Print on demand means items are printed individually as orders come in. There's no minimum quantity, no upfront inventory, and no risk of being stuck with 200 shirts nobody wants. It's a flexible, low-commitment way to offer branded merchandise.

What is Bulk Ordering? Bulk ordering means placing a larger order upfront — typically with a minimum quantity — in exchange for a lower cost per unit. You receive everything at once and manage the inventory yourself.

When Print on Demand Makes Sense

  • You're just starting out and want to test the waters without a big investment

  • You want to offer merchandise to customers without managing inventory

  • Your needs change frequently and you want flexibility

  • You're running an online store and want orders fulfilled automatically

When Bulk Ordering Makes Sense

  • You have a consistent need for branded apparel (uniforms, events, team gear)

  • You want the lowest possible cost per item

  • You're ordering for a specific event or deadline and need everything at once

  • You know exactly what you need and how many

The Bottom Line There's no wrong answer — it comes down to your business model and what stage you're at. A lot of TSR Design clients actually use both. They'll run print on demand for their online store and place bulk orders for their team uniforms or seasonal promotions.
